Overview

The Energy Monitoring and Infrastructure Optimization project focused on improving visibility into facility wide electrical infrastructure, operational efficiency, and long term energy consumption trends across Universal Studios Hollywood.

The project included the installation and support of PowerLogic ION Enterprise by Schneider Electric, a complete web enabled power management solution used to monitor real time power conditions, analyze power quality and reliability, and review historical infrastructure trends to help identify energy waste across the property.

By combining facility engineering, infrastructure analytics, and operational coordination, the project helped engineering and finance teams better understand electrical demand, identify inefficiencies, and support long term operational savings initiatives.

Technical Scope and Execution

The technical scope included configuring and supporting enterprise energy monitoring workflows, reviewing real time and historical power consumption data, and identifying infrastructure patterns that contributed to unnecessary energy usage.

Several initiatives focused on converting attractions and infrastructure systems to operate more efficiently. This included installing new MCCs with integrated VFDs to regulate demand and load factors on exhaust fans, intake systems, and water pumps used throughout multiple rides and attractions.

The project also included creating an annual company wide employee energy awareness campaign. This involved developing logos and branding for t shirts, sweaters, posters, sticky pads, banners, and other promotional materials while coordinating with local utility providers to support on site conservation outreach programs.

Production Challenges

The challenge was translating large amounts of infrastructure and utility data into practical operational decisions that engineering, operations, and finance teams could act on. Monitoring systems only provide value when the information can be trusted, interpreted correctly, and converted into measurable operational improvements.

Outcome and Impact

The project improved visibility into facility wide electrical infrastructure and contributed to measurable operational savings. Working alongside the finance and electrical departments, electrical overcharges in excess of $700,000 annually were identified and corrected, adding substantial long term savings to the theme park’s yearly operational budget.
